Known for his Kouign Amaan and Almond Croissant amongst other bakes, Chef Gontran has outdid himself again this festive season! Inspired by the CNY treats, he has whipped up three creations — the Pineapple and Coconut Tart; Orange and Chocolate Marble Cake, and Chocolate and Hazelnut Kouign Amann to welcome the lunar new year! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetAs part of #Gontrangoeslocal creations, Maestro Gontran had came up with many other localized renditions of the ever-popular Kouign Amaan, such as the Gula Meleka and Coconut previously. As nuts are one of the favorite snacks on our tables this Lunar New Year, Gontran has came up with the Chocolate and Hazelnut Kouign Amann ($4.50)! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset This yummy treat is made up of French Chocolate and chockfull of crunchy crushed hazelnut! I found this version of the Kouign Amann was less flaky and crusty than the original version, which makes it cleaner to devour it. My eyes immediately lit up when I took my first bite as I was pleasantly surprised by the chunks of hazelnut found within the chocolatey pastry. Délicieux! I was glad that this was not overwhelmingly sweet too! The combination of chocolate and hazelnut was just a match made in heaven, because think.. Nutella. Nutella flavored Kouign Amann with an added crunch. And I say, grab this with a cup of coffee! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset You definitely can’t go without oranges in your CNY celebrations, can you? Synonymous with the celebrations, Gontran has creatively infused this auspicious fruit into his bakes. Instead of having your usual Nian Gao or serving Kueh Lapis to your guests, you can be the hipster host, to serve these delicious Orange and Chocolate Marble Cake to your guests! Priced at $4.50/slice and $18 for the whole cake, this makes a delicious treat for the festive season!  Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetEach slice is filled with the moist buttery taste, complemented with the taste of rich French chocolate, and cleanly finished off with a hint of citrusy zest. A great combination, I must say! Do remember to get a few loaves at once if you’re intending to buy them for CNY, because your guests will definitely reach out for these more than once! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetPineapples, are the next group of fruits that you can’t do without in the festive season! Signifying luck and good fortune, they are an ubiquitous symbol of prosperity and of CNY, as decorations or in the form of the crowd favorite, the buttery pineapple tarts! If you can’t seem to get enough of the tiny pineapple tarts, Gontran has made this specially for you! A modern interpretation of pineapple tarts, TBB is serving you the Pineapple and Coconut Tart ($8.50). A huge one at that, to curb your cravings once and for all! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset This beautiful pastry consists of a smooth pineapple mousse sitting on a crisp sugar pastry base, topped with light coconut chantilly cream, white chocolate disc and with the finishing touches of edible gold leaves, to welcome the new year with lots of gold and fortune! This was my favorite amongst the other CNY creations. The pineapple mousse tasted light and fragrant, best eaten when it is being served cold.

Besides CNY, February is also the month where we celebrate something that is literally close to our hearts. Valentine’s day! Tiong Bahru Bakery has also specially prepared a little something for you on this very hearty day! Pun intended. The Nougat and Strawberry Macaron ($8.50)! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset This kinda makes a good gift on Valentine’s day to your crush or loved ones if you run out of romantic gift ideas. Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetThis pretty heart is made with the perfect pairing of fresh, fragrant nougat cream and juicy strawberries, cradled between a delicate heart-shaped macaron shell. This huge macaron shot a cupid’s arrow through our hearts with its aesthetically pleasing appearance, as well as its pleasant taste. A kind of sweetness that would reverberate through your veins, which would make anyone’s day better. Not too sure if it’s because of the sugar rush though!

This Nougat and Strawberry Macaron will be available from 9 February to 15 February, at all Tiong Bahru outlets! For a limited time period only, remember to get your hands on it before it goes flying off the shelf, breaking hearts like it always does.
