Review: Dazzling Cafe 蜜糖吐司專賣店 Singapore

Dazzling Cafe has finally arrived on our shores, and it’s definitely flooding our Instagram feeds with its amazing, amazing presentation! I’m still so awed by the appearance of their food, even after one day. It is SO PRETTY!

Having first opened their doors for their soft launch just on Saturday, I thought I would have an opportunity to visit them so soon, because of the snaking queues and crazy crowds. I even heard that they were fully booked for the entire day right from their opening on Saturday. Thank goodness, I am a final year slacker, and I’ve crazy foodie friends who don’t mind taking a risk with me on one fine Tuesday morning to head down here!

Boy, was I excited!

The Place
Dazzling Cafe is located within the brand new mall, Capitol Piazza (yes, you read that right. It’s Piazza, not Plaza), which is located just diagonally opposite Raffles City (City Hall MRT). The mall is still undergoing massive renovation, so don’t worry just head on into the mall, because Dazzling is just through these glass doors.Photo 21-4-15 11 03 13 amDon’t worry, there are signs to guide you lost souls, like me!
Photo 21-4-15 11 06 40 amI LOVED how the cafe looks. It is just so pretty and whimsical! Besides, it is clad in turquoise! One of my favorite colors! 😀Photo 21-4-15 10 19 02 pmBeing a bird, I reached the place at 11am. 1 hour before its opening, and look at the queue! Okay it’s not very long, but it caught us by surprise because… Don’t you guys have to work?!
Photo 21-4-15 12 06 37 pmHere’s pretty much how the inside of the first level looks. The second storey is closed for the time-being because of the renovations!

After an hour’s wait, we finally got our chance to enter the cafe! A note though, they only sit each table at every 3-5 minutes interval. Our best guess is because they don’t want to tax the kitchen with too many orders at once, or… it could just probably be a marketing ploy to keep a perpetual queue outside the cafe.. Sneaky.

The Food
First, here are the menus!

For the soft launch period, no alcohol or brunch will be served!

We were so spoilt for choice, we took the entire queueing duration to decide on what to order because everything just looked so pretty! Haha!

So, we started off with a beverage: Rose Latte (With Alcohol) – $8++ Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset To us, this tasted just like Bandung, with a hint of coffee! A good twist to your usual cuppa, but it’s unfortunately not pink! Much to my dismay!

Next up, we had our sweets served to us!
Strawberry Ice Cream Waffle ($14.90++) + Mochi ($2)
Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset I’ve always known Dazzling for their toasts, but not so much for their waffles! Then again, I’m a frog in a well. Anyway, we ordered this pretty waffle, served in such a unique presentation which makes it easy to share amongst a group!  Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset Here’s a close-up on the waffle. Each petal served with a dollop of whipped cream and strawberry slices. Hmm.. Where’s the mochi? Dazzling has outdone themselves by stuffing mochi within the pockets of the waffle to give a sticky, chewy texture! How creative!

However, I did not exactly like how the waffle was with the mochi in between though! I personally love crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside kinda waffles, with a cake-ish taste. This chewy waffle was bordering upon being soggy to me, and the mochi stole the limelight from the taste of the waffle. However, there are many others who loved this rendition though! So, do try it for yourself!

Cheddar Cheese Danish Honey Toast ($17.90++)Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetThis dish sounded really nice, but the hefty price tag was what deterred the majority of us. Such a simple sounding dish though. We went ahead with ordering it any way, and this was probably the best decision of our entire meal.
Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetThe looks of this dish has no wow factor, in comparison with their other offerings. However, the slab of toasted cheddar cheese atop of the croissant-texture like buttered toast was just wow. The sweet and savory combination was definitely on point, and I couldn’t stop going for it!

Matcha with Azuki Beans Honey Toast  ($19.90++) Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset The dish that made us go “OOOOOH” in unison when it was first served. HAVE YOU SEEN SUCH A PHOTOGENIC DISH BEFORE?! I HAVE NEVER. IT IS SO PRETTY, I CAN CRY. LOOK AT THOSE GREEN SWIRLS. I LOVE. Besides the presentation, the ice cream was also pretty great because it seems to be made to withstand long photo taking sessions! Even after, i believe 10 minutes, the scoop of ice cream did not falter. Oh! You have the choice to choose your toast to be crispy or original/normal too! We went ahead with the original!Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetAfter we are done with our oohs and ahhs, and phototaking, a waitress came over to help us dissect this master piece. So we are apparently supposed to just eat the cubes of toast hidden within the square crusts.Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetThis is so pretty, even after being dissected. However, taste wise, was a little of a let down. Why? I felt that the toast cubes were rather under-buttered. In the sense that I felt like I was actually just having a usual cube toast with matcha ice cream. Secondly, the crust encasing the cubes of toast was supposedly not to be eaten (?), because it was rock hard. Basically, just inedible, even for a bread and crust lover like me. So I was left really disappointed. A plus point, though, for the strong matcha flavor of the entire dish. A definite order for matcha lovers!

Lastly, we had our savory dish, that is…

Bacon and Mushroom Fettuccine ($18.90++)
Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset The presentation is simple, yet really pretty! Why? Because RUNNY EGG!
Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset  I thought this fettuccine tasted like our Mee Pok who lost his way and walked into an Italian kitchen. Moreover, the cream sauce was a tad too diluted. A comforting dish, at best. But definitely not worth $18.90++!

Closing Remarks

I really loved my experience at Dazzling Cafe, despite the hits and misses on the taste of the food! The price tag at Dazzling cafe can be almost categorized as EXORBITANT. A toast that costs me ~$20? No way. But I guess we got to pay for the effort gone into making such photogenic dishes and of course, the wonderful environment.

Well, from the limited dishes I tried, I suppose they fare better in their savories here in Singapore. But I know, all of you are just gonna ignore this and order the toast and waffle anyway. The presentation of their food definitely did not disappoint, but their food could definitely use some tweaking! Besides, I really love how they take feedback constructively despite being such an established name in Taiwan, without putting up any airs, and slam criticisms. Our local cafes should definitely take a leaf out of their book.

I am excited to visit Dazzling again to try out their other toasts, and their full menu when they officially open in May! Yeah.. I know I criticized their toast.. BUT there’s just something that’s redeeming about them. Maybe it’s just because they are SO PRETTY!

How to get there?
