I know some of us may be fretting about where to bring our beloved mothers for dinner on Mother’s day, which happens to be on next Sunday. Mark your calendars hor! So I’ve a couple of posts coming up to give you ideas on where you can bring your mums for a different kind of dining experience, or for something that she might like!
If you’re looking for somewhere with a nice, quiet ambience, and not too far out, The Royal Mail Restaurant & Bar may just be the place for you!
The Place
Located at The Ascott, a couple of steps away from Raffles Place MRT, this semi-fine dining establishment makes a good place for an after work Anniversary celebration too, since it’s in the CBD area! The Royal Mail Restaurant and Bar is a 60-seater establishment on the second level of The Ascott.
Here’s a look at their dining area, and feel free to explore both levels of their establishments!

The Food
The Royal Mail has recently revamped their menu and added on several amazing dishes, such as the Seafood Bouilabaisse, while giving their best sellers a little twist, like its Kurobuta Pork served with Apple Butter Sauce.
Here’s the new menu of The Royal Mail:
Before you start your meal, you’ll be served with their complimentary in-house bread. Although this might be a common practice, I feel the urge to tell it to you guys because this is not just BREAD. IT IS A BAKED CHEESE BREAD.
Possibly one of the highlights of our night because this bread was amazing. Crisp on the outside, and in its interior is filled with guyere cheese. That addictive savoriness. We actually asked for more of this throughout the meal!
Starters:
1) Seafood Boiullabaisse (S$28)
This was an absolute delight. The seafood used here were so fresh, the stew was bursting with flavors and seafood goodness. I thought it tasted just like Lobster Bisque! Besides the tangy broth, the Red Malabar Snapper, Langoustine, and Blue Mussel shared the stage in this star-studded dish.
Look at this cute Langoustine! If you didn’t know, Langoustine is also known as Norway Lobster!
2. Scallop Carpaccio and Tuna ($26)
Look at that presentation. What an amazing play of colors, and that’s not all to it to this dish. Consisting of Hokkaido Scallop Carpaccio and lightly seared Tuna, this dish was so appetizing, it whetted our appetite. That thick slab of tuna… You gotta order this!
3. Trio of Tomatoes ($18)
For our vegan/vegetarian friends, they’ve got something for you too! This trio of tomatoes consist of Cherry Tomato Confit, Semi-dried Tomato, Fresh Yellow Cherry Tomato with Bocconcini and Pesto. We weren’t quite impressed with this dish, because after all.. It’s cherry tomatoes. Besides, if it’s charged at $18, I’d expect more impressive flavors from this one, instead of just tasting like.. Cherry tomatoes.
Main Courses
1) Porcini and Bacon Risotto ($32)
Pretty plating, once again. This is what it is named, with Aged Parmesan Cheese. While parts of it were cooked al dente (“to the tooth”), the others were unfortunately quite unpleasant to bite. Otherwise, I thought the taste of the risotto was pretty good, not too creamy and yet, cheesy enough, the way I like it!
2) Miso Black Cod ($42)
BEST.COD.EVER. Pronto. The dish you MUST get when you’re there, especially for your mom if she’s health conscious! Wow. Wow. Wow. This cod, with Leek Fondue, Seaweed Butter, Sesame Tuille and Bonito Flakes blew me away with its play in textures. The cod was, oh so soft and silky, and the Sesame Tuille (wafer) added a crunch to this dish. Fish never tasted so good before.
3) Honey Glazed Kurobuta Pork ($56)
This is yet another favorite of mine as well. Because PORK. This thick slab of kurobuta pork is served with a side of mesclun salad, white wine apple and apple butter sauce. The flavors went so well together, with the sweet-savory play on this dish. The pork was tender as well. I wish there was more fat to it though! Overall, an amazing dish. I highly recommend it!
4) Roasted Whole Fish – Japanese Yellow Sea Bream ($78)
Not a flattering sight eh? The only time I saw a yellow sea bream was on a sushi game on my phone, so when this was served to us, I was really excited. This fish is air flown from Japan. Served with Lemon, Garlic Confit and Scallion, this sea bream has a hint of freshwater sweetness. And I just couldn’t stop dipping my fish into the sauce provided. SO YUMMY!
Desserts
1) A Dessert Platter ($32)
A platter that is good to share and order if you just want to have a taste of the Chef’s selection of their 4 desserts in the restaurant!
2) Enhanced Bergamot Earl Grey Jelly ($15)
I can hear all you earl grey fans squealing in delight right now. This earl grey jelly was just so refreshing, especially after a meal. The distinct, yet not overpowering taste of earl grey, topped with frozen yogurt, passionfruit coulis and Macerated berries gave this dessert a tangy punch. We were surprised to find froyo being used instead of ice cream! A really delightful and refreshing dessert!
3) Eton Mess ($18)
The signature dessert dish here. All of its components went so well together, I could only describe it as a beautiful mess. Strawberries, Meringue, Hazelnut Crunch, Salted Caramel and Devon Cream. Every component complimented the other. A great take on the Eton Mess.
4) Peanut Butter Jelly ($18)
The dish I’ve been looking forward to all night. And look at that unique presentation. I’ve never seen PB&J done this way before. Atop of a toasted brioche, consisted of cranberry jelly, chocolate ganache and caramelized banana. The subtle hint of peanut butter in every mouthful of this sent me to heaven. However, we came to a consensus that the soft brioche used stood out a little like a sore thumb, in terms of its taste. Otherwise, a really unique twist to this mainstream brunch food!
5) Sticky Date Pudding ($18)
Please tell me you thought this was a lava cake too! We were all anticipating for the flow when we cut up the lava cake. To our dismay, there was none, BECAUSE IT IS NOT EVEN A LAVA CAKE! Served with Vanilla Brandy Sauce, Vanilla Ice-cream and walnut crumble, I thought this sticky date tasted rather average. Perhaps The Lokal’s take on this has raised the bar too high for me.
Closing Remarks
I enjoyed my dinner at The Royal Mail, and it is some where I would definitely consider going for a meal with my friends or for a little celebration. The presentation of their dishes were all beautifully plated, and the quality and freshness of ingredients are apparent in the taste of their dishes. I was thoroughly impressed.
