Review: Hvala Waffle Bar @ 313 Somerset

Hvala means Thank You in Croatian. Aww they so sincere.

Run by a really sweet and humble couple, Hvala Waffle Bar is a “Waffle on the go” concept in the food basement of 313! Honestly, before Hvala existed, I always viewed waffles as the ones served in Ice Cream shops, circle on the plate lor! How can bring around one? Okay I no creativity ok? HAHA! Except for the belgian waffle kind lah (LOVE THOSE IN BKK, BY THE WAY). But Hvala has changed how we, or rather, I view waffles these days!

Waffle on a stick, why not? Besides, having waffles on a stick means I’m less likely to ACCIDENTALLY finish one whole waffle on my own! Right? Haha!

The PlacePhoto 14-5-15, 4 03 13 PMThis was taken when they first opened, I think their space has become slightly brighter now, if I’m not wrong. Haha! Located on B3 of 313, they are sandwiched between Tsujiri and the new outlet of Churros 101! The competition seems stiff just in the basement of 313, including the likes of llao llao in the area.

I’ve visited Hvala thrice, in fact. Each time I’m impressed by their innovation, and each time, the queue gets longer. Haha!

So this is how you order your soft serve + cake or waffle! YUM YUM! Llao llao what?Photo 30-11-15, 6 33 19 PM
And you can pick your toppings here, which may vary from day to day!

The Food

1. Let us first start with their soft serve!Photo 7-10-15, 9 00 19 PM
I’m honestly not too sure if other flavors are available for their soft serves because I’ve had their vanilla ones only. And it is really one of the better soft serves I’ve had, I’d think better than the also start with H one, located just upstairs. Hehe. Smooth, creamy and very satisfying! Go for their caramelized cookie sauce! YUM.

2. Waffle on a stick!Photo 15-5-15, 12 15 29 PM
This was the first item I’ve had from Hvala! And I thought it was a pretty good invention because, like I said, it prevents me from finishing an entire waffle by accident, and it also allows me to have different flavors all at once without feeling too stuffed!

This is the Bella Banana ($4.90)! I loved how the waffle had the crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside kind of textures. Besides, this is my favorite combination, BANANA AND CHOCOLATE NEVER GOES WRONG! A good idea if you’re craving for some waffles!

3. Red velvet cake and Chocolate Truffle cakePhoto 7-10-15, 9 03 32 PM This is one of their new inventions – the cake cubes within the soft serve and toppings. Gosh, why do they make calories so easy to consume. Photo 7-10-15, 9 01 26 PM
I personally prefer the Red Velvet cake to the Chocolate Truffle one! The red velvet was more moist and had more flavor, and the chocolate truffle had a weird after taste. It might just be me, you may have to try this on your own!

4. PUFFLES (+$1 to each combo)

Their brand new invention, inspired by Hong Kong’s Oddies Foodies! You know the egglettes in soft serve thing? Super instagrammable one. Haha! Now this is Hvala’s rendition of it.  Photo 30-11-15, 6 35 24 PM
Chocolate sauce drizzled atop of these comforting egglettes. I loved how I’m able to pluck and savor them one by one!Photo 30-11-15, 6 37 58 PM
They also have BLACK SESAME sauce available! Try this because it is definitely something more unique than what we can get from llaollao, or the usual chocolate sauces! Photo 30-11-15, 6 38 33 PM
Here’s our OVER THE TOP PUFFLES, with caramelized pineapple!

Closing Remarks

Hvala has definitely re-defined my experience of having a waffle, and also is a great fix for my waffle craving when I’m in town! Besides their waffles, I really like the idea of having my red velvet in a cup with SOFT SERVE!

The competition is so stiff in the basement of 313, and I’m glad that they have found something that would stick with the consumer’s minds for a little while. The cup of puffles itself is a great advertising strategy on its own, because I was actually attracted to it while I saw someone having it at Orchard Central today, and realized that, oh CHEY.. It’s from Hvala ah. HAHA!
