No, The Assembly Ground is not affiliated to Assembly Coffee at Evans Road, if you’re wondering! In fact, it is an extension to the multi label store carrying A LOT of my favorite brands like Herschel, Komono, Benjamin Barker (the menswear are really.. Gosh), Status Anxiety, Hypergrand etc. – The Assembly Store.
These brands used to be only available online, and I could only admire them through my computer screen, and part with my money to see them shipped over. Hence, the Assembly Store is one of my favorite places in town because it’s always exciting to visit them to look at what they have to offer from their various brands, especially so as I go to Cathay quite rarely. Go rarely then got new stocks mah. HAHA!
Hence, it took me so long to pay The Assembly Ground a visit. Hey, they are also on the Entertainer app, where you can enjoy 2 mains for the price of 1!
The Place
Yup located just beside their store, lies The Assembly Ground!
When I walked in, I went like wa die, so dark how to take pictures. HAHA! BUT, the place is rather spacious, with quite a lot of seating too!
The bicycles on the wall is intended to reflect the cycling culture that they have in Melbourne, because co-owner Nelson once worked and managed a cafe in Melbourne! Cool!
THAT BIKE ON THE WALL looks so familiar. IS IT THE SAME ONE AT BUGIS?! Near Artistry there that one?! Please, someone enlighten me!
The Food
Since we were slightly full from our breakfast of eclairs and had some time before our movie, we decided to dine in The Assembly Ground. Ya, I know, very fat. People walk around to shop to pass time, we eat, hence explodingbelly.
1) Mac and Bull ($17.50+)
Mac and cheese always gets us excited. This is their version of mac and cheese, with braised beef cheek and smoked bratwurst.
Mmm.. Cheesy enough! I thought the mac and cheese on its own was slightly bland, without too much of the cheesy flavor. It could work both ways. For people who find eating a lot of cheese jelat, they might like this because it’s plain on its own and you definitely won’t get sick of it after a while! Yet for me, I like my supposedly cheesy stuff to be cheesy. Y’know what I mean? Haha!
The braised beef cheek and smoked bratwurst portions could be more generous, but they were definitely flavorful!
2. Ragout of Beef with Rosti ($23.50+)
This was one filling dish – Slow roasted angus beef, rosti, bread, trio of mushrooms, onion jam, creamed spinach and topped with a 62 degree egg.
There you go! Hope you enjoyed this #eggporn.
I loved the idea of having CUBES of thick chunky angus on my plate, and this was definitely a meat lover’s favorite! While we did not see how the spinach fit into the picture (it’s hidden below the egg by the way), but okay lah, having some greens on your plate is good, my mother say.
Closing Remarks
I’ve seen negative reviews on Instagram about The Assembly Ground, and hence did go into the cafe with lowered expectations. However, while the food was not mind-blowingly good, I thought it was comforting enough for me. A good place to dine in if you’re craving for the a comforting brunch fare or dinner when you’re in the area, but not somewhere I’d particularly travel to, for my fix! I’ve yet to try out their coffee, and so I’ll definitely be back when I’m catching a movie at The Cathay!
