Step aside salted egg croissants, seriously… step aside. HAHA! Our homegrown brand, Prima Deli has caught on the salted egg fever and it seems like they have made a calculated move to launch their CHEESE TARTS before the ever-popular BAKE cheese tarts arrive in Singapore at ION Orchard! Clever.
Sporting their unique oval shape (actually don’t look very oval to me) just like their other pastries and pies, they have launched not one, but TWO types of cheese tarts at a pretty affordable price tag! They have indeed set the bar high for other competitors by assuring that these tarts would be LAVA cheese tarts. Anything that flows.. Gets our attention, don’t they?
Lava Cheese Tarts ($2.40, promotional price at $2 from 8th – 30th April)
Having tried BAKE’s cheese tarts before, and many people have used these tarts as a bench mark, I dare say Prima Deli cheese tarts will please the cheese tart fans out there with their buttery, cheesey and oozy tart filling. I was really surprised at how good it actually tasted!
However, the tart base might be lacking as compared to the ones from tart as they were relatively harder and less buttery, lacking in the fragrance the ones from BAKE or any other good tarts has.
Salted Egg Lava Cheese Tarts ($2.80, promotional price at $2.40 from 8th – 30th April)
This one is clever. A game changer. This tart not only has the fragrant cheese filling, below the layer of lava cheese lies the dormant salted egg sauce in copious amounts, waiting to explode as you cut it open after heating it up.
Delicious. I was AMAZED. The salted egg sauce was not overly sweet, and it had the grainy texture that I absolutely adore. The sweet and slightly savory combination was oh so good. However, I’d imagine my friends and sister who don’t like overwhelming buttery flavors to like this, as this was, as you can expect… Really, really buttery. BUT I LOVED IT. A LOT.
A word of caution though. In fact, TWO.
First, as Prima Deli is a takeaway bakery as we all know, caution has to be taken if you decide to dabao them home instead of having them on the spot. The molten cheese center is pretty fragile and it can get smashed and mushed really easily if you’re not careful!
Second, while you can enjoy the tarts without heating them up, I’d recommend them to be heated up for the most optimal experience and ahem.. photographs. Here are the settings Prima Deli recommends on the oven:
To reheat room temperature tarts, put into oven set to 180 degree celsius for 5-6 minutes. While for chilled tarts, you’d require the same settings with 10-12 minutes!
Do take note that microwaving the tart would alter the taste and texture of the lava cheese and salted egg! I tried microwaving one, just to see why, the salted egg sauce got cooked. Heh heh. I obviously wasn’t listening in class when my physics teacher talked about the different currents in the microwave and toaster over, and how it affects the cooking. I digress. BUT the moral of the story is, DON’T MICROWAVE THOSE TARTS! I’d rather you have them cold or at room temperature.
If you don’t happen to have an oven, a toaster oven would work fine as well! Just heat it up for a while, like 5 minutes!
Well.. I certainly do hope that there would be a cheese tart craze in Singapore soon because I absolutely adore these little pockets of fats. The salted egg idea is just genius, in my opinion. The cheese tarts are available at ALL Prima Deli outlets, remember to get them before the end of April to enjoy the discount and now…
Let the queues begin.
