In the continuation of my previous post on the first ever Pompompurin Cafe in Singapore, my friend @chewypompipi has tried out a couple of dishes there and here’s her first ever review on Explodingbelly!
Pompompurin Café has finally come to Singapore! Sanrio has been a really big part of my childhood and I’m a HUGE fan of Purin! It has always been in the top 3 of my personal sanrio chart (Editor: Who’s first ah? Hello Kitty sibo?). I was pleasantly surprised that they chose to bring in Pompompurin instead of other better-known characters like Gudetama or Rilakkuma. BUT DID YOU KNOW?
Pompompurin is the #1 most popular Sanrio character in Japan now! YAAAAY PURIN I KNEW YOU HAD THE POTENTIAL IN YOU!
However, I don’t think Singaporeans are very familiar with Pompompurin, because when I was snapping a picture of the main entrance, there was this mother and her child walking by and she pointed to Purin and said, “girl ah, you see the hamster very cute!”
Uhh… NO. Pompompurin is a DOG. A GOLDEN RETRIEVER. PLS.
Ok so some background first: Purin, like other dogs, has his own secret stash of shoe collection, especially Papa’s leather shoes and Mama’s sandals. He enjoys napping and his favourite food is Mama’s crème caramel pudding. Aww so freaking cute?! And his BFF is Muffin the hamster! (Editor: Siao my golden retriever would probably eat my hamster).
The Place
Pompompurin décor on the walls, I love.
THIS IS JUST THE ENTRANCE.
So the first thing that will catch your eyes is obviously the Pompompurin tree centrepiece, which is freaking adorable! OMG. LOVE.
There’s also these 4-seater booths called “Tomodachi House” which features Purin’s friends (yah he got a lot of friends cos he’s popz). Damn cute urgh I was going to sit there but I noticed somewhere better… the cutest area of the entire café – WAIT FOR IT…
I can’t bear to put my food on Purin’s face!
The Menu
The Food
Cookies & Cream Caramel Latte (S$11.99)
So for my drink I’m having this cookies & cream caramel latte which is DAMN CUTE cos got the Purin cookie but it’s not really worth the money because the whipped cream to drink ratio is waaaaaay off. Too much whipped cream, too little drink, and their whipped cream is quite dense/heavy, it’s not the aerated fluffy kind.
But then again, it is the most photogenic drink in my opinion… so if this is your thing then just go for it lah!
Pompompurin’s Beef Stroganoff (S$18.99)
For my main I’m having the Beef Stroganoff cos it has the signature Purin face with a meat patty as its beret HAHA SO CUTE!
I was actually pleasantly surprised when I ate this because it tasted better than I had expected (for a character café). The patty was a bit dry but got gravy so OKAY lah. The downside for this dish would be the rice to gravy ratio cos there was really A LOT of rice and I found myself rationing gravy towards the end of my meal.
Pompompurin Pudding (S$9.99), Mango Parfait (S$19.99) and Banana & Caramel Pancake ($16.99)DESSERT TIME! I had the Banana & Caramel Pancake cos it is the cutest HEHE. As I was already quite full from the Beef Stroganoff, I actually struggled a bit to finish the pancakes. I think it would be perfect if you shared this between 2-3 persons.
The banana and caramel pancake is DAMN ADORABLE and photogenic but once again, it’s a bit too dense/heavy for my liking. So this is actually very filling also, and I prefer my pancakes fluffy.
Alternatively, you can try the Pompompurin Pudding, which should be the signature cos afterall, Purin is named after Japanese Pudding. There’s also a chocolate beret biscuit! So cute!!!
This would be a more manageable dessert if you’re already very full from your main, or if you’re broke la HAHAHA
Here are some of the other food and drinks I saw during the tasting:
Taco rice in a cup of friendship (S$19.99) – SO CUTE 3D PURIN + GOT MUFFIN
Pompompurin’s Coconut Milk Chicken Curry (S$17.99)
Spaghetti Napolitana (S$26.99)
Mushroom & Bacon Carbonara (S$26.99)
Bagel’s Special: Pancake Tower (S$21.99)
If you’re wondering where’s the Bagel… Bagel is the name of Purin’s squirrel friend. You’re welcome.
Oh yes, you see the Purin cups in both pasta dishes and pancake stack?! Let me give you one more reason to order these and part with your money – YOU GET TO BRING THE PURIN CUP HOME. YAS! TAKE MY MONEY!!!!
Closing Remarks
Yes everything is expensive, from the drinks to the food to the authentic Purin merchandise. And there were some hits and misses for the food. But I think overall it is still a positive experience for me cos I’m a big fan of Purin & I SEE PURIN AT EVERY CORNER OF THE CAFÉ. It’s so cute that it’s ridiculous. Just don’t be too anal about the food lah, it’s quite edible. (Editor: Yes, my food at the gudetama cafe was inedible)
If you’re a big Sanrio/Purin fan, you KNOW you can’t miss out on this. You will LOVE it. MAD LOVE.
Editor: Hope you guys have enjoyed reading Chewy’s take on the new POMPOMPURIN CAFE and enjoyed the pictures as well, even though she didn’t edit them. Yes. I’m death staring at you.
HAHA! Nonetheless thank you for heading down to the cafe on my behalf and here’s to more of her guest postings! HAHA!
