Beat the Heat with Waan Cha’s Thai Milk Tea @ Novena

I heard it’s 35 degrees out there today. Also, Explodingbelly has just become a full fledged adult, and knows how all of you working people feel – that excitement to get a good drink when you head back to office after lunch as you face the throngs and throngs of work. Or is it just me?

For all of you people working in the Novena area, lucky you because Waan Cha is here at Novena Regency serving up their signature drinks from Thailand! Expect drinks like Thai Milk Tea, Thai Coffee and Thai Milk Green Tea. Wow. I wish we had that here in Tanjong Pagar!

The Place

Waan Cha is a kiosk more than a shop, really. Its small space could only hold maybe a party of 5-6 people before it gets incredibly cramped. That is why this is the perfect place for you to grab and go, to enjoy your drink at your very own seat in the office!

Novena Regency seems like a really really new space in the area with the number of unoccupied units we see. But there seem to be quite a lot of F&B outlets in the area! Skip the brand new chicken rice place though, we went there after Waan Cha and boy, it was bad.

If you’re walking towards Novena Regency from Revenue House, Waan Cha can be found at the very first entrance of Novena Regency. If you’re coming from the bus stop just in front, you’ll have to walk to your left to find Waan Cha. The place is ulu, man.

The Menu

Photo May 21, 13 52 25For such a small space, I guess we shouldn’t expect a lot from its menu. Operating mostly as a drinks kiosk, Waan Cha is also looking to come up with several small bites that you could take away like mango salads and such.

For now, they also have macarons that are baked by a baker from Thailand!

The Food

We tried 3 drinks from them – Thai Milk Tea, Thai Milk Green Tea and Thai Pink Milk. All the iced drinks are priced at an affordable $3.30.

We were told that Waan Cha uses the tea leaves from the South of Thailand, and unlike most commercial thai milk tea places, they do not use the number 1 brand, so do not expect their milk teas to taste exactly the same as the usual ones we are used to.

The Thai Milk Tea was one we had the highest anticipation for, however, it fell short of our expectations because it was rather flat. We usually like our thai milk teas to be more gao, however this one was slightly too smooth and flat, also the taste deviated from ones we are so used to. I guess it is pretty much of an acquired taste as it got slightly better the more we drank it. A bit I guess.

Photo May 21, 13 09 22 The Thai Pink Milk was surprisingly pleasant, and not as sweet as we thought it was. This was basically a bandung like drink, yet it was lighter with a hint of rose. A ladies drink, but the man who came with me liked it more than I did. Is it I too manly? Or he too feminine? HAHAHAHA! Photo May 21, 13 09 38I personally loved this one BEST. The Thai Milk Green Tea, I loved the jasmine fragrance in this one, and the slight bitterness in the tea gave it an additional punch. Not too sweet like most of the thai drinks, I see myself ordering this EVERYDAY if I were to be working in that area!

Photo May 21, 13 12 29We also tried some of their macarons, which were going at $2.50 each! I thought they were okay, some hits and misses. Some of the tart shells were a little too soft, but we both preferred the chocolate and raspberry ones due to its stronger flavors. The green tea was a no-no for us because it did not have any hint of green tea AT ALL, and it tended more towards a lotus paste like flavor. HAHA! We’ve since feedback to them, and hopefully it’s better the next time!

Closing Remarks

We thought Waan Cha was a good addition to the small enclave of food places you can find in Novena. I guess thai drinks never fails as most people tend to like them, especially thai milk tea! One thing I liked about the place was that the drinks were not too cloyingly sweet and make you feel like you have exceeded your sugar intake for the day. HAHA!

We wish they served more items on their menu so it could keep us coming back, other wise I guess the place would only be a hit for people who are living and working in that area!
